<intro>
Lucky 7! The New Jersey Nets won their 7th game of the season on Saturday night against the also terrible New York Knicks. With a still worst NBA record of 7-55, the Nets actually have a winning streak going, having victories in their last three road games.

In a battle of the bad in basketball, the Nets smacked the Knicks 113-93 at Madison Square Garden to achieve their seventh win of the season. Two of the seven victories for the Nets have been at the expense of their New York neighbors. The teams don’t play each other again. They have split the season series, which will possibly be the only non-losing record the Nets achieve this season.

The Nets missed 12 of their first 13 shots early, but the Knicks managed to come around and out suck them (a term easily applied to much of the Bridge and Tunnel circuit). The Nets took chances. As the second-worst three-point shooting team, the Nets magically made 14-of-24 from way far away. After an 0-18 start for the Nets, the Knicks paid homage to their opponents by misfiring on all of their three-point tries, going 0-18, an NBA record for the most three point shots taken without a make.

Knicks fans were not pleased to see their already awful team sink to a new subterranean low. The Garden crowd booed their team. Although New Yorkers are quick to vocalize their anger, the Knicks were especially embarrassing as they were beaten in every statistical category by a team with a .118 winning percentage.

The winning team, however, was thrilled. Net Courtney Lee had 25 points in his first game back after missing three with a sprained ankle. The victory was so inspiring, Lee may have lost touch with reality a little bit, and by “a little bit” I mean, a lot.

“I feel finishing the season we’ll be a pretty good team,” he said, perhaps somehow unaware that the Nets are still in the running to be the worst team in the history of the NBA.

The Nets must win three times in their remaining 20 games to avoid matching or setting the record for fewest wins in a season, a terrible title held by the 9-73 record of the 1972-1973 Philadelphia 76ers.

It is difficult to tell if Lee is five-and-a-half short of a six pack, or just super excited to be able to say something positive after a game. He analyzed the victory carefully.

“It shows that we’re growing as a team,” Lee said, “that we’re maturing.” This is true because when you’re at the bottom, there’s no where to go but up.
</intro>

    <intro>

The New Jersey Nets have been so bad this season that some local radio pundits have pondered their chances in the NCAA Tournament.

Yesterday afternoon the Nets were 5-52, a mere 31 games behind the Boston Celtics. So, of course, they go into Boston last night and whip the Celtics, 104-96. Paul Pierce did not play, but Ray Allen, Rajon Rondo, and Kevin Garnett did.

Coach Doc Rivers led a conga line of Celtics, heads bowed, back to the locker room. "I got nothing to say," Garnet said, before saying, "I feel disgusted." The team walked and talked with the solemnity seen at a funeral.

Perhaps losing to the Nets is indeed a form of basketball death. The Nets still need four wins in their next 24 games to avoid finishing the season with the worst record in NBA history. The 1972-'73 Philadelphia Sixers now hold the mark at 9-73.

Brook Lopez led New Jersey with 25 points, while Garnett led Boston (36-21) with 26 points and 9 rebounds. Boston has lost more home games this year (11) than in the prior two seasons combined.

Kiki Vandeweghe and his band of temps are playing out the season with little purpose other than clearing cap space for a shot at this summer's fertile free agent market - which makes the upset over the Celtics even more surprising.

The Nets have been the leaders in the de facto "John Wall Sweepstakes." The team from the swamp that often plays like swamp creatures is sure to have the worst record this year. We'll see if they'll have the worst record of any year.
</intro>

    <intro>

Jayson Williams choked on the words while his tears dripped on the statement he was trying to read in a New Jersey courtroom this morning. The former NBA star had just been sentenced to five years in prison for fatally shooting limousine driver Costas Christofi with a 12-gauge shotgun.

It took eight years for this legal theater to conclude. In 2004, Williams was acquitted of manslaughter but was convicted of covering up the shooting, apparently altering the crime scene to make the death look like a suicide. In 2003, Williams paid Cristofi's family $2 million to settle a wrongful death suit.

Williams apologized to the judge, the victim's family, and to his own children. Facing Christofi's sister, Williams said, "There's not a day I wake up that I don't feel sorry for what I did to Mr. Christofi and that I put you through this."

This is the latest chapter in a book of tragedies that has haunted Williams. His oldest sister, Linda, died of AIDS in 1983. Then his youngest sister, Laura, died of AIDS in 1988. Laura infected her husband before she died, then, yes, he too died of AIDS in 1994. Williams later adopted their son and was a grandfather at 28.

Williams has spent most of his life within arm's length of the law. His police jacket includes several assaults (nearly all spawned by nights on the bottle) and DWI charges - culminating with a night of drinking and a shotgun blast into Mr. Christofi's stomach.

Jayson Williams will be eligible for parole in 18 months. But with the ascending horrors he has experienced you can reasonably assert that he has always resided in some form of a cell.

In April, 2009, police broke into a Manhattan hotel room to find Williams in a drunken, pill-ridden, suicidal state. It took a Taser to subdue the hulking, former forward. Perhaps the next time they won't find him alive.
</intro>

    <intro>
Louisville coach Rick Pitino is denying a report that he's interested in a return to the NBA with the New Jersey Nets.

"There's not an ounce of truth to it," Pitino told ESPN.com's Pat Forde.

"I have no interest, period," Pitino said Thursday. "I'm done with coaching professional basketball. I've put the professional ranks behind me."

The New York Daily News reported Thursday that sources close to Pitino said the former Boston Celtics and New York Knicks coach had reached out to Nets brass in recent days and had intermediaries recently contact Nets president Rod Thorn on his behalf.

A source close to Thorn said the Nets' president has denied that he spoke to Pitino, the Daily News reported.

A source close to Pitino who exchanged text messages with Pitino on Thursday morning told ESPN.com's Andy Katz that there was no truth to the report about Pitino having any direct or indirect contact with the Nets.

The source close to Pitino tells ESPN.com Andy Katz that while Pitino did speak with Thorn at the funeral for former New York Knicks player and coach Dick McGuire earlier this week, that conversation was the sort one would normally have at a funeral -- not about a job.
</intro>

    <intro>
The Nets are looking for their first win. They keep coming up empty.

When the Dallas Mavericks and former Net Jason Kidd beat New Jersey 117-101, the Nets set a new record. They are 0-18. Not the kind of record they wanted, it is the worst start by an NBA franchise, passing the 1999 LA Clippers and the Miami Heat in 1988-89.

The Nets face the Chatlotte Bobcats on Friday. It will be a home game, but there do not seem to be many fans showing up for Nets games anyway. The record for the longest losing streak in a season is 23. That record is shared by the Memphis Grizzlies and the Denver Nuggets. There is hope before it gets that bad. The Nets play the New York Knicks on Sunday, in a match of two teams with very bad records. The Nets 24th game of the season will be in Atlanta on Decmber 13.

Not sure what can help the Nets. After 16 games they fired Lawrence Frank as head coach. That change has not produced any wins yet. The Nets future is also in doubt, as the team continues to discuss plans to move to Brooklyn.
</intro>
